PORTRAITS OF LOUIS (LEWIS) DEITRICH (DIETRICH) AND CHRISTINA
The Dietrich family has on loan Lewis Dietrich and wife Christina wall portraits at the AWTHS. Lewis was from Germany and settled in the New Breman area working with the canal system in western Ohio. He married Christina Roh and the family came to Arcanum in 1893. They bought the lot and had a brick building constructed which was the Louis Deitrich Saloon and Hotel in 1894. The Saloon continued until 1899. Louis owned a farm in Monroe Township and then lived in Pitsburg. He is buried in Mote Cemetery and had nine children. Today the Arcanum Wayne Trail Historical Society is home in this designated historic site known as "Louis Deitrich Saloon and Hotel".
MARTIN RICE, JOHN COLVILLE, AND GUNDER FAMILY HISTORY
Family history of Martin Rice who settled in Lewisburg, Ohio. His importance lies in his two daughters who married founders of villages – Dicy Rice was the wife of John Colville who founded Ithaca and Nancy Rice married William Gunder the Founder of Arcanum. We have further information on the Martin Rice family and William Gunder family available for sale under the "publication" tab. The book The Secret Town also tells of the founding of the town of Arcanum.
GORDON, LAIR AND KARR FAMILY
Have you ever wondered about the town of Gordon located in the southern part of Twin Township? How did it get it's name? Who lived there? AWTHS has some actual documents on the Gordon family as well as the Karr's including obits, Philip Gordon's will, the Karr Family Bible tree, the Gordon family homestead deeds from Mike Stump and other notes found at the Darke County Genealogical Society Library at Garst. Koehler Family Gathering 1880-90's. John and Manda Koehler came to Arcanum in 1879. They lived at the corner of W. George and Sycamore. Mr. Koehler ran the meat market at 20-22 W. George Street. More info in our library files as well as the "Arcanum Business" book.
