Jointly sponsored by the Twin Township Trustees and AWTHS a all-day “Hands on Workshop” to learn correct and safe methods to clean stones and fix head stones as well as info on preserving cemeteries. Instructor Mark Morton from Gravestone Guardians of Ohio will lead the class.

2019 Coffee and Conversation Series 10:00 a.m.                     

Coffee and Conversation Series continues for the sixth summer.  Those attending the past sessions have enjoyed sharing laughs, memories, and stories of growing up in Southern Darke County.  Each session features a different guest with a little different background and different experiences. They will be sharing their stories and they want to hear your stories too. Enjoy a cup of coffee and a donut while reminiscing with neighbors and friends.  You are welcome to bring memorabilia to share with us during these morning sessions. Each session begins at 10:00 a.m. on the second Saturday of the month.  

  July 13th – Annette Stewart   Annette will share how she uncovered some of the history of a log house on her family’s property, the decision to dismantle it after so many years, the steps of that process and finally the journey of the log house to its new location. 

August 10th – Glenn Eley   Glen is a WWII veteran and long time Arcanum Resident.

September 7th The  Arcanum Wayne Trail Historical Society will sponsor a guided walking tour of Arcanum's historic sites in town.  The AWTHS will open at 9am for refreshments and house tours followed by a short program on the renovation of the building with the walking tour to follow.   Rain date set for September 14th.  Follow event on Facebook for updates.Download a pdf verision of the brochure A Walking Tour .

September 12th – Roan Smothers will speak to us on Longtown. Mr. Smothers in researching his family genealogy found that his mother’s families’ origins were from Longtown, in Darke County Ohio. Through his research, he discovered the Clemens and Alexander’s families were the first settlers of Longtown.He joined the Union Literary Institute Preservation Society (ULIPS) and is currently the President of the ULIPS and have expanded the mission of the ULIPS to save all the remaining structures of Longtown. He wrote and nominate the James and Sophia Clemens Farmstead in Darke County and the Union Literary Institute to the National Register of Historic Places and to the National Park Service’s Network to Freedom Program as an Underground Railroad.

Programs or meetings are held January, March, May and again in the fall,  (September and November ) the second Thursday evening of the month unless noted.

Stop in and visit our home of the present AWTHS.   Lewis Deitrich purchased the lot in 1894 and construction began of the brick building for a saloon and hotel. We have Lewis (Louis) and Christina's wall portraits on loan to view. Tour and learn the history as well as visit the many displays including our "old schools" of the area and the Marj Heyduck display case.  Past businesses of Arcanum and surrounding area are featured as well as clubs and the military
